Effects of micronised microencapsulated ferric pyrophosphate supplementation in patients with advanced cancer and iron deficiency: a single-centre cohort pilot study; Jr of Blood Transfusion 2021

Key Findings

The supplementation of 30 mg/d of micronized Ferric pyrophosphate in combination with 80 mg/d of ascorbic acid in advanced cancer patients with hyposideraemia led to a significant increase in sideraemia and ferritinaemia. Moreover, in some of the patients whose serum iron level did not increase, an increase in haemoglobin was observed.

Micronized, Microencapsulated Ferric Iron Supplementation in the Form of >Your< Iron Syrup Improves Hemoglobin and Ferritin Levels in Iron-Deficient Children: Double-Blind, Randomized Clinical Study of Efficacy and Safety; Jr Nutrients 2021

Key Findings

A 12-week supplementation with microencapsulated Iron Syrup resulted in a significant increase in ferritin and hemoglobin levels as compared to placebo (p = 0.04 and p = 0.02). Adverse events were reported with similar frequencies across both study arms. Ferric pyrophosphate microencapsulated represents an effective, well-tolerated, and safe option for the management of nutritional iron deficiency in children.

Liposomal Iron for Iron Deficiency Anemia in Women of Reproductive Age: Review of Current Evidence; Jr of OB & Gynecology 2018

Key Findings

Encapsulation of micronized iron in liposomes is associated with lesser exposure to gastric contents, lesser interaction with food contents, no exposure to different digestive juices, targeted delivery of iron and allows lower doses to be administered in lieu of direct absorption without need for protein carriers. The available evidence suggests that liposomal iron significantly increases hemoglobin, ferritin levels in pregnant women as well as in women with iron deficiency.

A Novel Approach for Iron Deficiency Anaemia with Liposomal Iron: Concept to Clinic; Jr of OB & G 2020

Key Findings

Conventional oral iron therapy is limited in many patients because of dose dependent side effects, insufficient absorption, lack of compliance and limitation in various inflammatory conditions. Liposomal iron is a technologically designed, innovative form of iron which due to its differential delivery system ensures higher absorption and bioavailability, greater tolerability and least gastro-intestinal side effects unlike conventional oral iron preparations. This review provides a critical discussion and a comprehensive view based on the author’s review of the medical literature concerning the technology of liposomal iron preparation, mechanism of its absorption, its advantage over conventional iron preparations and clinical evidence on its usage in iron deficient states in pregnancy and certain inflammatory conditions.

Efficacy of a microencapsulated iron pyrophosphate-fortified fruit juice: A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in Spanish iron-deficient women; Br Jr of Nutrition 2011

Key Findings

The fruit juice consumption involved increased intake of carbohydrates and vitamin C, and increased BMI within normal limits. Ferritin was higher in the F group after week 4 (P < 0·05) and became 80 % higher than in the P group after week 16 (P < 0·001), and transferrin decreased in the F group compared with the P group after week 4 (P < 0·001). RDW was higher at weeks 4 and 8 in the F group compared with the P group (P < 0·05). Transferrin saturation increased after week 8, and haematocrit, MCV and Hb increased after week 12, in the F group compared with the P group. Serum Fe did not change. sTfR and ZnPP decreased in the F group at week 16 (P < 0·05). Iron pyrophosphate-fortified fruit juice improves Fe status and may be used to prevent Fe-deficiency anaemia.

Oral Liposomal Iron: A Treatment Proposal for Anemia; World Jr of Anemia 2017

Key Findings

The prevalence of any type of anemia is very high (>95%) among children, adolescents, and pregnant women in India. The main risk factors for iron deficiency anemia (IDA) are: Low iron intake, different levels of chronic blood loss, and malabsorption. In addition, certain chronic diseases like chronic kidney disease (CKD), chronic heart failure, cancer, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are frequently associated with IDA.2,4 Iron deficiency anemia is also known to affect a large part of adult and elderly patients in internal medicine units. The distinctive features of liposomal iron like high bioavailability, lesser side effects, and good compliance make it suitable to be used in patients who require iron administration and are intolerant to oral treatment, IV iron treatment, or lack good absorption.

Oral Ferric Pyrophosphate Formulation Utilization Surveillance Study to Assess Clinical Impact on Hemoglobin levels: Maxiim-Hemoglobin Study; Int jr of scientific study 2019

Key Findings

A total of 60 gynecologists participated and completed the survey, which involved 1073 pregnant subjects and patients suffering from IDA (864 patients, i.e., 80%). Mean Hb level at baseline was found to be 8.98 g/dl, 10.03 at week 4, and 10.99 at week 8. Thus, rise of Hb from baseline to week 8 was found to be 2.01 g/dl. Adverse events were reported in only 10 patients. The study suggests that oral Ferric pyrophosphate formulation therapy can serve as potent choice of therapy for IDA in pregnancy, both therapeutically and prophylactically.
